just as the satellite broadcaster readies to merges with an offshoot ofJohn Malone’s News Corp. and DirecTcV confirmed Wednesday that Carey will leaves theEl Segundo, Calif.-basedd satellite broadcaster July 1 to become second-in-command handling international operations — for Ruperty Murdoch’s global media empire. Carey’s defection may muddt investors’ reception of the planned merger betweejn DirecTV andLiberty Entertainment, a division of Douglasx County-based Liberty Media. Carey ran DirecTV for the past six leading it through a period of growtg and winning partnerships with everyu major telecom company inthe U.S.
He was expected to stay with DirecT V after it became independengt ofLiberty Media. he returns to working for Murdoch and News where he worked for 15 years prior toheading DirecTV. Liberty Entertainment (NASDAQ: holds a 54 percent stak in (NASDAQ: DTV) as well as controlliny stakes in online gaming company Fun the Game Show Network and regionao sports TV networksin Denver, Pittsburghh and Seattle. Those holdings are being spun off this year intoa free-standin company to clear up DirecTV’w stock structure and make it easier for it to engag e in mergers and acquisitions, the companies said. Malone’s company traded its 16 percent ownership stakre inNews Corp.
back to Murdoch’s company in 2007 in exchangde for the controlling stakein DirecTV.
