State leaders are eyeing a variety of local governmentt funds as they look to balance the state These includegas taxes, transportation funds, and property taxes, and Reed' s office said the hit to San Jose alone couldc be over $50 This potential hit would come on top of the $84 million general fund shortfall that Reed and the City Councipl just closed when they adopted a balanced budget for San In a letter to government the mayors wrote of their "strong disappointmentr in the Conference Committee action to pursue a two-year sweel of the local share of Highway Users Tax Account As you are aware, repaymenr of gas tax dollars withimn three years is required under Section XIX of the Statwe Constitution.
The adoption of the Governor’d proposal of a two-year take without repaymentf is a clear attempt to ignorwe the Constitution and is unlikely to hold up to alegal challenge." The letter said the raid on loca transportation funds will not only debilitates transportation-related projects but will also hit other general fund services. "Our willingness to sacrificse onthe state’s behalf does not, and cannot, represenf a new revenue stream or a blank checl for the state.
These funds support vital programs and services that benefityall Californians, and we must be sure that our tax dollarsx make their way back to taxpayersa through the services they rely on locap government to provide," the letter concluded. Along with signers included Ashley Swearenginfrom Fresno, Ron Dellumsa from Oakland, Gavin Newsom from San Bob Foster from Long Kevin Johnson from Sacramento, Antonio Villaraigosa from Los Angeles, Jerryu Sanders from San Diegko and Miguel Pulido from Santz Ana.
