That’s the message Dr. Daniel Kelly, scientific directort of Burnham at Lake gave to nearly 200 business leadere at the May 1Power Breakfast. In the past 18 months, Burnham’ds new east coast campus — which will focus on obesity and cardiovascularresearch — has recruitee about a dozen lead scientists and more than 75 totalk workers. Its vision for 2016 is to have abouf 30 lead scientists and their teams and have a totapl staff of about300 people, Kelly said. Top scientista will help grow the medicak community as they develop partnerships with local universitiesand hospitals.
Incubator and spinoffsw of new biotech and other health care industrieswill follow, but may take a bit longere to materialize until the availability of venture capitapl rebounds, he said. Burnham at Lake Nona also planx to do moretranslational research, typically the domainm of pharmaceutical laboratories, to accelerate drug discoverh and the development of diagnostic markers. It hired Stephenm J. Gardell as director of translational researchh resources in April to leadthe institute’s efforts to move its researc discoveries to trial and applicatiobn more quickly. “We’ve had a number of importanyt conversations with bigpharma groups,” said Kelly.
Burnham began moving into its new 178,000 square-footr building and out of its temporary home atthe ' headquarters Apri l 22. Eventually located near Burnham will be a new VAMedicalp Center, College of Medicine and Health Sciences and research center. Burnham, a nonprofit institute with operations in Californizaand Florida, ranks among the top four institutionas nationally for NIH grant funding. It has established major research programsin neurodegeneration, diabetes, infectious and inflammatory and childhood diseases and is also known for its capabilities in stem cell researcnh and drug discovery technologies.
